Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed, the illustrious fire, with the smoke as his banner, remembered Vāruṇa, the lord of the worlds, Aditi's son and the god who lives in the water and is the lord of the waters.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, धुएँ को अपनी ध्वजा के रूप में धारण किए हुए, तेज अग्नि ने लोकों के स्वामी, अदिति के पुत्र और जल में रहने वाले तथा जल के स्वामी भगवान वरुण का स्मरण किया।

"Quickly give me the bow, the two quivers and the chariot bearing the flag of a monkey that were obtained from King Somā.
"मुझे राजा सोम से प्राप्त धनुष, दो तरकश और वानर ध्वज वाला रथ शीघ्र दे दो।
Pārtha will accomplish a great task with Gāṇḍīva and Vāsudeva with the cakra. For that reason, let those be given to them." Vāruṇa told the fire, "I will give them."

Then he gave him that extraordinary gem of a bow, endowed with great valour and capable of extending fame and deeds. It was incapable of being hurt by any weapon, but could destroy all weapons. It was the chief of all weapons and was the destroyer of enemy armies.

It alone was equal to one hundred thousand and was the extender of kingdoms. It was radiant, smooth and unblemished everywhere and adorned with many colours.
यह अकेले ही एक लाख के बराबर था और राज्यों का विस्तारक था। वह हर जगह दीप्तिमान, चिकना और बेदाग था और कई रंगों से सजा हुआ था।
For an eternity, it had been worshipped by the gods, the dānava-s and the gāndharva-s.

He also gave him two inexhaustible quivers and a chariot with divine horses, with a monkey on the banner. The horses were silvery and were from the land of the gāndharva-s. They were in golden harnesses, as swift as the wind or the mind, and resembled white clouds.
उन्होंने उसे दो अक्षय तरकश और दिव्य घोड़ों वाला एक रथ भी दिया, जिसके ध्वज पर एक बंदर था। घोड़े चाँदी के रंग के थे और गंधर्वों की भूमि से थे। वे सुनहरे हार पहने हुए थे, हवा या मन के समान तेज़ थे, और सफेद बादलों के समान थे।
Every weapon was laden onto the chariot and it was incapable of being vanquished by the gods or the dānava-s. It was radiant, with a thunderous roar and was enchanting to all beings.
रथ पर हर हथियार लदा हुआ था और यह देवताओं या दानवों द्वारा पराजित होने में असमर्थ था। वह तेजस्वी गर्जना के साथ दीप्तिमान था और सभी प्राणियों को मंत्रमुग्ध कर रहा था।
Through his ascetic powers, it was created by Prajāpati Bhaumana, the lord of the worlds. Its form was like that of the sun and could not be gazed at.

It was on this that Lord Somā had ascended when he vanquished the dānava-s. It was radiant in its beauty and was gigantic, like an elephant or a cloud.
दानवों को परास्त करते समय भगवान सोम इसी स्थान पर आरोहित हुए थे। वह अपनी सुंदरता में दीप्तिमान था और हाथी या बादल के समान विशाल था।
On this supreme of chariots was mounted an excellent flagpole, golden and resplendent like Śākra's weapon.
रथों के इस शीर्ष पर एक उत्कृष्ट ध्वजदंड लगा हुआ था, जो शक्र के हथियार के समान स्वर्णिम और देदीप्यमान था।
On the flagpole was a divine monkey marked with the signs of the lion and the tiger. It seemed to roar out from that adorned perch.
ध्वजस्तंभ पर एक दिव्य वानर था जिस पर सिंह और बाघ के चिन्ह अंकित थे। ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था जैसे उस सजी हुई चौकी से कोई गर्जना कर रहा हो।

There were many other great beings on that flag and their roars made enemy soldiers lose their senses.
उस ध्वज पर और भी कई महान प्राणी थे और उनकी दहाड़ से शत्रु सैनिकों के होश उड़ गये।

Then Pārtha circumambulated that supreme chariot, adorned with many pennants.
फिर पार्थ ने अनेक पताकाओं से सुशोभित उस श्रेष्ठ रथ की प्रदक्षिणा की।
He worshipped all the gods and attired in armour, with guards for his fingers and wrists, and with a sword slung against his chest, ascended it, like a virtuous man on a vimāna.
उसने सभी देवताओं की पूजा की और कवच पहने, अपनी उंगलियों और कलाइयों पर पहरा दिया, और अपनी छाती पर तलवार लटकाकर विमान पर चढ़ गया, जैसे कोई नेक आदमी विमान पर सवार हो।
Arjuna was extremely delighted when be grasped the Gāṇḍīva, the divine and supreme of bows, created by Brahmā in ancient times.
जब प्राचीन काल में ब्रह्मा द्वारा निर्मित दिव्य और सर्वोच्च धनुष गाण्डीव को हाथ में लिया गया तो अर्जुन को अत्यधिक प्रसन्नता हुई।
Paying his homage to the fire, the valorous one grasped the bow with great force and strung it.
अग्नि को प्रणाम करते हुए उस वीर ने बड़े बल से धनुष को पकड़कर उस पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाई।
When the powerful Pāṇḍava strung the bow, the hearts of those who heard the sound trembled.
जब शक्तिशाली पांडव ने धनुष पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाई तो उसकी ध्वनि सुनने वालों के हृदय कांप उठे।
Having obtained the chariot, the bow and the two inexhaustible quivers, Kaunteya thought himself to be powerful and accomplished for the task.
रथ, धनुष और दो अक्षय तरकश प्राप्त करने के बाद, कौन्तेय ने स्वयं को इस कार्य के लिए शक्तिशाली और निपुण माना।

Then the fire gave Kṛṣṇā the cakra, with a vajra at its centre. On receiving this fiery and desirable weapon, he too became accomplished.
तब अग्नि ने कृष्ण को चक्र दिया, जिसके केंद्र में वज्र था। इस उग्र एवं वांछनीय अस्त्र को पाकर वह भी निपुण हो गया।

The fire said, "O Madhusūdana! There is no doubt that with this weapon you will be victorious in battle, even over those who are not human.

It is certain that in the destruction of great enemies—humans, gods, rākṣasa-s, piśāca-s, daitya-s, nāga-s—you will be the superior in battle.
यह निश्चित है कि महान शत्रुओं - मनुष्य, देवता, राक्षस, पिशाच, दैत्य, नाग - के विनाश में आप युद्ध में श्रेष्ठ होंगे।

O Mādhava! Whenever you hurl it at an enemy in the course of battle, it will irresistibly kill and return again to your hand."
हे माधव! जब भी आप युद्ध के दौरान इसे किसी दुश्मन पर फेंकेंगे, तो यह बिना रुके उसे मार डालेगा और फिर से आपके हाथ में आ जाएगा।
The illustrious Vāruṇa also gave Harī a terrible club named Koumadaki, the destroyer of daitya-s, with the roar of the thunder.
महाबली वरुण ने हरि को वज्र की गर्जना के साथ दैत्यों का नाश करने वाली कौमदकी नामक एक भयानक गदा भी दी।
The delighted Kṛṣṇā and Arjuna told the fire, "O illustrious one! We are now armed with weapons and know their use. We are mounted on chariots with flags.
प्रसन्न कृष्ण और अर्जुन ने अग्नि से कहा, "हे महान! अब हम हथियारों से लैस हैं और उनका उपयोग जानते हैं। हम ध्वजों वाले रथों पर आरूढ़ हैं।
We are eager to fight all the gods and demons together, not to speak of a single wielder of the vajra who wishes to fight for the sake of a nāga."
हम सभी देवताओं और राक्षसों से एक साथ लड़ने के लिए उत्सुक हैं, एक भी वज्रधारी की तो बात ही छोड़ दें जो नागा के लिए लड़ना चाहता है।"
Arjuna said: "O fire! When the powerful Vārṣṇeya releases the cakra in battle, there is nothing in the three worlds that Janārdana cannot vanquish.
अर्जुन ने कहा: "हे अग्नि! जब शक्तिशाली वार्ष्णेय युद्ध में चक्र छोड़ते हैं, तो तीनों लोकों में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जिसे जनार्दन नहीं जीत सकते।
Having obtained the bow Gāṇḍīva and these two inexhaustible quivers, I am also capable of vanquishing the worlds in battle.
गाण्डीव धनुष तथा इन दो अक्षय तरकशों को प्राप्त करके मैं युद्ध में समस्त लोकों को जीतने में भी समर्थ हूँ।
O lord! Blaze as you wish and encircle this great forest. We are capable of helping you in your task."
हे भगवान! अपनी इच्छानुसार प्रज्वलित हो जाओ और इस महान वन को घेर लो। हम आपके कार्य में आपकी सहायता करने में सक्षम हैं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच एवमुक्तः स भगवान्दाशार्हेणार्जुनेन च तैजसं रूपमास्थाय दावं दग्धुं प्रचक्रमे
Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed by Dāśārha and Arjuna, the illustrious one assumed his energetic form and began to consume the forest.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: दशार्ह और अर्जुन द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, उस महाबली ने अपना ऊर्जावान रूप धारण किया और जंगल का उपभोग करना शुरू कर दिया।
He surrounded it from all sides with his seven flames. As terrible as the fire at the end of a yuga, he began to angrily consume Khāṇḍava.
उन्होंने अपनी सात ज्वालाओं से उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया। एक युग के अंत की आग के समान भयानक, वह गुस्से में खांडव को भस्म करने लगा।
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! When he surrounded the forest from all sides, he roared like the clouds and burnt all the beings.
हे भरत वंश में बैल! जब उसने वन को चारों ओर से घेर लिया तो उसने बादलों के समान गर्जना करके समस्त प्राणियों को भस्म कर दिया।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The blazing forest looked like Meru, king of the mountains, golden in its great radiance.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वह धधकता हुआ जंगल अपनी महान कान्ति में स्वर्णिम, पर्वतों के राजा मेरु के समान लग रहा था।
